چکیده

I would like to thank David Hodgson (2008) for his intriguing reply to my paper on the Knowledge Argument (Schier, 2008). I have four general points I would like to make in response. The first point is simply to agree that scientific representations may be integrated. I drew the somewhat vague distinction between ‘fragmented’ and ‘integrated’ representations in order to capture the ways in which we can represent the parts and the relations of a phenomenon without representing the parts in relation. The claim is that scientific representations are fragmented, or more accurately more fragmented, than visual representations, because only vision has the resources to represent all the parts in relation. The key claim I make is simply that only vision has access to sufficient resources to construct a representation with that content. On this point, we are in agreement (see Hodgson, 2008, p. 113). I do however have problems with Hodgson’s alternative account of scientific representation, with the argument he provides to support his claim that my account is consistent with dualism and with his claim that my position shows that Mary must learn something new.
